Bang Bang are the South African three-piece band who have been making waves for some time now with their unique and quirky take on house music. In a similar way to the likes of Crazy P, Greenskeepers and 2020 Soundsystem, Bang Bang fuse live instrumentation, vocals and a band mentality with a house music background. The result is a blend that works equally well on the dancefloor as it does at home.
Hailing from Cape Town, the trio of Matt Prehn, Matthew Loots and vocalist Ruegroove have released their signature sound on various underground labels including Myna, Baker Street, Shrewd, Agave, Candy Music and most recently Eighth Dimension. In 2010 they will also appear on the currently super-hot Kolour Recordings alongside this release ‘Broken’ for Lost My Dog.
Lost My Dog were recently tipped by DMC Update to “loom out of the underground in 2010” and this release may well be the start of that journey. On the remix front the UK label have lined up some of the hottest young talent London has to offer in Giom, Pete Dafeet and Yse, along with Chicago house veteran Sean Smith.
Giom, originally from Niort in France, is one of the most exciting artists in the deep house genre right now. He has collaborated with and remixed artists including Fred Everything, JT Donaldson and Swirl People as well as releasing his original music for Amenti, Ornate and DJ Heather’s Blackcherry.
Lost My Dog co-owner Pete Dafeet could almost be classified as a stalwart now; its six years since he first made an impact with the guys from Shaboom Records who helped launch his career. That time has seen Pete grow into a highly regarded figure within UK house music, with over 50 releases bearing his name.
Yse is known to many as one half of Rhythm Plate, but it is his solo productions for Lost My Dog which have caused a stir in recent years. His ‘Bounce Back’ track is hailed as an anthem by many and his recent ‘A Life Sentience EP’ sparked rave reviews from the house music press and DJs.
Sean Smith is one of Chicago’s top rated producers having released music on labels including Soma, Classic and Loveslap alongside his own excellent Smooth Agent label. A veteran DJ, he has performed with legends Mike Dearborn, Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk, Armando, Ron Carroll and Derrick Carter.

Great to see Bang Bang back in action. Haven’t heard much since “Fire Funk” on that Agave Summer Sampler back in ’06 maybe? Dig all the tracks, but I’d still like to see a lower-key cut at it, something more suitable for a “nightcap”. Obviously, this is house, but I think the vocals on this track would work well in something downtempo.
