Mansfield based Chris Hovey and Craig Goodwin are Subterfuge. As residents on the club and bar scene in the UK's Midlands, Subterfuge have managed to introduce their own unique blend of four deck no-nonsense house action, gathering a loyal following and support from many of the areas big named DJs.
Tony Thomas is a producer and DJ requiring no introduction. With over 150 original productions, collaborations and remixes to name (on labels such as Soma, NRK and Honchos) he is well established as one of house music's leading and most respected producers. As newcomers to production, Subterfuge have been supported in their first six months by Tony. A chance meeting that brought the three together, has seen a blossoming production relationship culminating in a collaboration between Subterfuge & Tony for their first outing.
The debut release for Lost My Dog ("Gettin' Serious") is a massive statement of intention from Chris and Craig. The track contains a huge array of influences, from the deep house of the Inland Knights, to jackin' Chicago beats a la Farina, Sneak and Carter, right through to the solid no-nonsense house of Steve Mac (Rhythm Masters). Subterfuge see their debut on Lost My Dog as, "…the catalyst for what we hope will be a string of releases. We want to make a mark, and intend to do so...with a blend of all the things that we like and trust musically".
Since collaborating with Tony the duo have been working hard to make sure that more material will be forthcoming. "We have been around production, other DJs and producers for years and had talked about making an effort to try and put out what we think are tracks that we would buy from the stores, but we feel are too few and far between. Being inspired by the talent in Nottingham such as the Inland Knights, DJ Hal and Tony Thomas, it made the intention a reality".
2005 looks bright for the boys, with forthcoming Subterfuge tracks and solo projects underway. The word on the street suggests that Subterfuge will be in your ears either in the club, in the bar, or on the plates.
