The Lowdown

One of Lost My Dog’s new signings from 2009 has ‘done a Clarke Kent’ and comes spinning out of the proverbial telephone booth as Roland Nights in 2010. Roland Nights penned three original tracks and two remixes for LMD last year under his Danny Stott name and felt the time was right to take things in a new direction. So far it’s working well as Roland has released a stunning EP and remixed Tom Middleton for Urbantorque, as well as remixing Jay West for Lost My Dog. The year ahead is looking bright for the Burnley based producer with several more projects in the pipeline.

‘Phazz’ comes backed with remixes from Vernon & DaCosta and tONKPROJECT, as well as more familiar Lost My Dog contributors Dominic Martin, Peckos and Artie Flexs. The Vernon & DaCosta remix was included on the label’s recent Miami Sampler and received huge support, including most notably from Mark Farina with whom it has become a DJ set staple.

Vernon & DaCosta are the Belgian duo who never fail to bump the dancefloor with their own blend of deep, funky house that has appeared on labels including Om, Robsoul, Aroma and Blockhead.

tONKPROJECT has made a name for himself over the past 12 months with his killer grooves appearing on standout releases for Urbantorque, Elevation, Behaviors and Proton.

Dominic Martin is currently riding high as his ‘East Glasgow Deep EP’ for Lost My Dog is causing damage with the likes of Jimpster, Jay Tripwire, Nathan Coles and DJ Heather. Releases for Tronicsole, Nordic Trax, Guesthouse and So Sound are also in heavy rotation.

Young Belgian producer Peckos released two EPs and a remix for Lost My Dog in 2009, the highlights being a 5/5 ‘Essential Release’ review from DMC Update, charting in German dance mag DeBug and receiving a chart placing from house legend Tony Humphries which led ‘Sensual Strawberry Soda’ to take off on download store Traxsource. This is his second remix for LMD in 2010 and comes ahead of a new EP in the summer.

Like Danny Stott/Roland Nights and Peckos, Artie Flexs was another new discovery for Lost My Dog in 2009. Two EPs (one of which received Mixmag’s ‘Tune Of The Month’ award) and a remix of Latenight Society paved the way for his debut full length project ‘The Journey’ in January 2010.

The Lowdown

Artie Flexs debut release ‘Disco Space EP’ for Lost My Dog in July of this year was an instant success, with Mixmag’s ‘House Tune Of The Month’ accolade being the tip of an impressive iceberg of support. Four months later and the Latvian DJ and producer is back with the ‘Damaged EP’, four devastatingly deep, techy and infectious grooves with electronic stylings befitting acts such as 2020 Soundsystem, Spirit Catcher and Motor City Drum Ensemble, three names to whom the 19 year old has been compared in reviews.

Support on Artie’s previous release, ‘Disco Space EP’:
Mixmag: “With all three cuts boasting a really infectious groove, this is captivating stuff.”
DMC Update: 5/5 “Three sublime exercises in deeper house with techno testicles.”
iDJ: “Artie Flexs delivers three intelligently primed deep to tech house club fillers.”
VMM: Recommended Tune “Worthy of a Spirit Catcher production, this is very tasty indeed”
Goa Club: “Three tech house cuts in the style of artists like 2020 Soundsystem and Motor City Drum Ensemble.”

Following the release of ‘Damaged EP’, in December Artie and Lost My Dog will release his debut album ‘The Journey’ in mixed and unmixed formats for free.

Artie Flexs was born in Riga, Latvia. He started DJing in 2002, playing at small clubs in his hometown before securing a residency at a club called ‘4luv&$’ playing more mainstream music, as many DJs will admit to when first starting out. At the same time he began to produce music and started working with fellow Latvian DJ Abu (of V.S. Project) who opened Artie’s eyes to a wider selection of music including progressive house, tech house, minimal and breaks. In 2006 he took a big step up the DJ ladder, playing alongside leading Eastern European DJs such as DJ Vital, Mr. Djinn and DJ Lite. 2007 was the year of definition for Artie, playing at famous events and club nights including Tonuss Club (Jelgava, Latvia), From Dusk Till Dawn (Tallinn, Estonia) and Wash My Brain (Rezekne, Latvia).

By early 2009 Artie’s music writing skills had also reached a more professional level and the first results were seen on Bedroom Muzik and Bashi Records in the spring of 2009. Shortly afterwards he contacted Lost My Dog with whom he has signed a string of projects.

Magazine Reviews

DMC Update – 5/5

Latvia’s Artie follows July’s ‘Deep Space’ EP with another tasty excursion into that timeless style of deep house originated in New York around the late 80s on labels like Nu Groove. ‘The Blame’ is majestic and loping with big riffs and lush chord-beds. The glacial space-drops hanging from the bassed-up testicles of ‘Precious’ recall great producers like Wayne Gardener – pure NY. After also nodding at modern torch-beaers like 2020 Soundsystem, Artie emphasises the underlying techy elements on ‘Damage’, which could be the best cut with its effortless drop into electro-flecked pastures. Like I’ve said before, the best pure house to come out of this country for donkey’s, thanks to records like this.

iDJ – 7/10

Timely drops with lovely, deep classic piano hooks save the nineties feel of ‘Precious’, but the true pick is the Chicago fashioned ‘The Blame’. Just check those organ grabbing chord stabs and retro piano strings.

This Is Why We Dance

You can usually rely on Lost My Dog for some solid deep house action, and this four-tracker from Latvian newcomer Artie Flexs doesn’t disappoint. On this evidence, the fact that he’s gonna have a debut album out soon is definitely good news, especially as it’s apparently gonna be available for free download – more news on that when I have it.

In the meantime, the tracks here mainly plough a deep house furrow, with two warm, instrumental dancefloor groovers – The Blame and Precious – and two cuts that mess about in that deep/prog hinterland, In Control and Damage (still in a dancefloor way, though, not a drifty pointless way, in fact In Control is quite techy). Unsurprisingly it’s the former two I’m feeling more, especially the bouncier Precious, but this is a safe use of your Earth pounds all the same.

DJ Reactions

Dubfire: 5/5

Fred Everything: like The Blame, thx

Brothers Vibe Precious is choice for me, Cool house vibes…

Grant Nelson: Full support

Asad Rizvi: another fine release on LMD

Nick Warren: 4 crackers, all worth playing

Blakkat: 5/5, Wicked!

Nick Holder: Artie Flexs is on the radar! Deepness well thought out!

Jason Hodges: Quality as always from the LMD crew..smooth deepness is always in order, this Damaged EP does not disappoint!

Sean Smith: Damage is mental. Feeling it!!

Murray Richardson: very good ep…The Blame is the one im feeling most of all!

Mr White: nice release !!! once again lost my dog puts together a well balanced ep !! this will get some PT!!

Matt Masters: sweet sounds.

Brown: Really like The Blame – some great synth action with a nice swingy feel and classic sounding bassline.

Harold Heath: all four tracks are cool, “the blame” probably the strongest, maybe because of its new-oldschool feel.

Brothers Vibe: Precious is choice for me : ) Cool house vibes…

Danny Stott: Really like this ep, deep & techy grooves throughout, really tight stuff!

Nacho Marco: Yes!

The Lowdown

Latenight Society from Orlando, Florida join Lost My Dog for the label’s first vinyl release in four months. The duo of Romano Arcaini and Jason Leva deliver a deep and driving house cut with an instantly infectious groove, monstrous bottom end and a sultry female vocal urging “make you wanna do right”. A very tasty remix package comes courtesy of Marko Militano, Pete Dafeet, Artie Flexs and Sean Smith.

Latenight Society’s music can be found on labels such as Nordic Trax, Eight Trax, Amenti and their own Tight Recordings. Included in their impressive discography are collaborations with the likes of Diz, Hector Moralez and Ken ECB.

Marko Militano, also known as one half of Trademarq and co-founder of the Bananza Music imprint, is one of the most hotly tipped future stars of the underground house world. His music, both solo projects and as Trademarq, have been released on some of the world’s most respected house labels including Derrick Carter and Luke Solomon’s Classic Music, Fred Everything’s Lazy Days and Justin Long’s .dotbleep. Always bringing musical elements productions, Marko once again hits the bullseye with a stunning rework of ‘Do It Right’.

Lost My Dog co-owner Pete Dafeet is currently enjoying a hot streak with original EPs recently released on Artizan Music, Ornate and his other side project Southside Shuffle, while his remix of Jake Island for Toolroom Records continues to take the plaudits.

Artie Flexs is Lost My Dog’s latest discovery. Hailing from Riga in Latvia, Artie caught the label’s attention with a simple emailed demo. LMD quickly snapped up two EPs, the first of which ‘Disco Space EP’ was released in September and also caught the attention of Mixmag who duly awarded it ‘House Tune Of The Month’. With his second offering ‘Damaged EP’ due imminently, Artie is certainly a name to keep a close eye on.

And from the brand new to the…more established! Sean Smith is an artist that has really impressed Lost My Dog recently thanks to his productions and record label. As one of Chicago’s top rated DJs and producers, he has released music on labels including Soma, Classic and Loveslap, performed with legends Mike Dearborn, Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk, Armando, Ron Carroll and Derrick Carter, and runs the excellent Smooth Agent record label.

Magazine Reviews

5 Mag, Chicago

Classic House sound from Orlando via the UK’s Lost My Dog imprint with a stopover in Chicago along the way. “Do It Right” features a muted vocal and the original mix is a groovy organ-driven number. Label boss Pete Dafeet funks up the mix while Chicago’s Sean Smith makes a remix appearance with an uptempo stomper that really and truly is my favorite mix in a solid five edit bundle. He has the “less is more” credo down pat with just some simple keys that make this work.

DJ Reactions

Giom: Loving this! Original is nice and jackin, and Marko’s remix is absolutely incredible, so these 2 are the ones for me, full support!

Diz: Militano is the most slept on cat out there!!! Wake up fools!!

Mazi / Audio Soul Project: Marko’s remix wins on the raunch-o-meter. Very slick and cool atmospheric vibe to that one. Will play for sure.

Carlos Mendoza: Marko Militano is a true talent. Excellent remix.

Scope: dope remix by marko!

Jazzy Eyewear: Awesome EP! Love the Militano Remix!

Soul Minority: loving the pete dafeet remix !!! Thx…

Robert Owens: love the movement in the original, great vibe

Mark Farina: Been rockin the original since WMC!! great track.

Matt Rhythm Plate: the original mix is nice, really like this – a proper deep and moody builder (like a philosphical bricklayer) of the remixes the pick of the bunch for me are the marko militano (nice beats) and pete dafeet (nice daft punk ‘around the world’-esque sounds)

Onionz: marko militano remix is rockin.

Fred Everything: Marko’s mix in my October podcast.

Tommy Largo: great package! all remixes are top, the orginal version will get most plays by me.

Neil Quigley: Love the Marko Militano remix, fantastic!

Nick Dare: Solid release. All mixes are strong, my fav’s are the Sean Smith and Pete Dafeet mixes.

Jason Hodges: Just what we have come to expect with LMD, right up to standard.

Marko Militano and Pete Dafeets mixes do it for me!

Terry Francis: like this, nice and dirty late night stuff.

Massimo DaCosta: Really cool EP, diggin a lot the Pete Dafeet and the Marko’s remixes.

Tom Golden: A super solid package, all the tracks are excellent. You’ve found a real gem with Artie Flexs.

Moodymanc: Artie Flexs mix is quality chunky house music!!!

Catalogue Number: LMDX013 | Release Date: August 2009

The Lowdown

Lost My Dog welcome another debutant to the label in the form of Artie Flexs. We had never heard of the Latvian DJ and producer when his demo dropped into our inbox but it instantly jumped out as something pretty special. Three tracks make up the ‘Disco Space EP’, each with its own devastating and infectious groove covering deep and tech house territories and taking in more electronic styles befitting acts such as 2020 Soundsystem, Spirit Catcher and Motor City Drum Ensemble.

By early 2009 Artie’s music writing skills had also reached a more professional level and the first results were seen on Bedroom Muzik and Bashi Records in the spring of 2009. Shortly afterwards he contacted Lost My Dog and the rest is history.

Magazine Reviews

Mixmag – House Tune Of The Month

Coming on Pete Dafeet’s underrated UK deep house label Lost My Dog is this smashing little gem of a release from Latvian newcomer Artie Flexs. Title track ‘Disco Space’ gets us going with its crisp, uptempo rolling percussion complemented by a subtle, sexy sax lead. Next up is ‘Attraction’, the percussion still on a pacey wave but with a more full-bodied harmonic riff and a spaced-out breakdown; finally there’s ‘Feel It’, again with melodic riffs (a la Spirit Catcher). With all three cuts boasting a really infectious groove, this is captivating stuff.

DMC Update – 5/5

All that happened here was Artie Flexs from Latvia posted his demo to the UK’s hippest house label and they decided to sign him up. The result is three sublime exercises in deeper house with techno testicles, the title cut leading off like a classic early 90s New York Nu Groover peppered with cosmic dust before ‘Attraction’ pursues a cool, lushly acidified path. ‘Feel It’ is monumental for the simple reason it evokes the great Master C&J, one of house music’s most underrated names, with its sinister, chunking bassline and haunted drop. The tapir’s todger.

iDJ – 7/10

Latvian producer Artie Flexs delivers three intelligently primed deep to tech house club fillers. ‘Feel It’ has some appealing seminal chord sustains and sweeps along to work its funky bass-heavy rhythms. ‘Attraction’ offers a perkier groove behind the leyered keys, however its ‘Disco Space’ that rules the three, with some special pan effects and warm synthy goodness.

VMM – 8.5/10 Recommended Tune

Future Latvian heavyweight Artie Flexs debuts on house giant Lost My Dog. Tackling niche tech house this, worthy of a Spirit Catcher production, is very tasty indeed. Delicious, lush chords for peak time floorfilling.

Goa Club (Spain)

Adam Collins (Omni AM): I’m feelin’ Feel It. This is totally a style that fits into my sets and you can be sure I’ll be dropping this! Sick sub bass but its really the tweaky noises that make this a modern acid track with out the conventional 303. Dope.

Danny Stott: Really love this, melodic and groovesome stuff. Torn between Disco Space and Attraction for favourites, both have loads of drive. Looking forward to playing these. Thanks.
