Catalogue Number: LMDX001
Release Date: March 2008

1: Chris Harris & Dominic Martin – King Of Swing
2: Chris Harris & Dominic Martin – King Of Swing (Dub)
3: Frank Solano – Move Ur Feet
4: Lee Jarvis – All I Need
5: Dave Miller – Movement In Still Life

The Lowdown

The varied 5 track ‘The Mongrel’ EP features some up and coming producers from all around the world.

Chris Harris and Dominic Martin kick start proceedings with a jazzy and swinging track. Chris and Dom have recently released Jazzmag EP for Lost My Dog, as well as some superbly well received EPs for Nordic Trax and Guesthouse. Hailing from Glasgow, the duo are making a name for themselves by picking up plays from DJs including Derrick Carter, Mark Farina and DJ Heather, who included one of their recent productions on her Om Summer Sessions mix CD. Their ‘King Of Swing’ track is available here in 2 formats – one featuring an infectious live trumpet and a dub version.

Frank Solano is part of the hugely influential Music 101 in Chicago, who organise the city’s finest and most notorious bash ‘Boom Boom Room’ amongst other activities. Frank has so far released music for US label Kolour Recordings and caught the ear of Lost My Dog with his deep and groovy offerings. ‘Move Ur Feet’ is exactly in this mould.

London based Lee Jarvis is getting pretty much the best education in quality underground house music, given that he works part time at Freerange Records and is head honcho at London clubnight Moochin, which has welcomed anyone who’s anyone in deep/Chicago house circles. He’s so far released remixes for labels such as Fazed Music and Clean House, including a remix of prolific US house producer John Larner.

Last but by no means least is Dave Miller, hailing from Perth, Australia. Dave’s tracks for labels such as Booth Trax, Dust Pan and Clean House have been given the stamp of approval from Joey Youngman, one of the hottest ‘Chicago’ house producers of the last few years. Its clear to see why as his track ‘Movement In Still Life’ has a definite nod towards the stylings of Joey, along with contemporaries The Sound Republic and Bryan Jones.

Magazine Reviews

iDJ – 4/5
Five tracks here and something for everybody, from boompty jazzy swing to deep, lullaby house and jacking romp. It’s all good, but if pushed highlights would be Chris Harris and Dominic Martin’s Dub and its heavy-duty swing, and Aussie Dave Miller’s Windy City take. It’s another case of LMD doing what they always do, and doing it rather well.

Only For DJs, France – 3 /4
EPs of pure boompty house still exist. Chris Harris & Dominic Martin, with ‘King Off Swing’ deliver a track which will please those in love with the sound of Chicago. It’s jazzy-house music with a chorus of trumpet that gets you booty-shaking. Frank Solano (with low electro), Lee Jarvis (deep) and Dave Miller supplement this release well.

The Lowdown

Lost My Dog approach their third birthday having built up a great reputation in underground house circles. Refusing to be pigeon-holed into any specific sub genre of house music, Lost My Dog releases range from deep house grooves, through Chicago influenced jackers, to acid and tech house floor rockers. Each release is aimed at pushing the label forward into new territory, releasing new sounds while always maintaining a high level of quality control. As such they’ve become one of those labels that DJs will always listen to, but never know exactly what’s in store.

As the label continues to go from strength to strength only one problem appears to still exist; finding the damn dog!

Lost My Dog kick start their 2008 schedule with a release from two of the hottest producers currently in the jacking house scene – Chris Harris and Dominic Martin.

For eight years Chris Harris was label manager for the Glasgow label Solemusic and head of A&R for its sister label Tronicsole bringing artists such as Swirl People, Phil Asher, DJQ, Inland Knights and Jay Tripwire on-board. In 2004 he left to pursue pastures new with the Jazz/Funk label, Buff Records. Chris is a qualified audio engineer and long standing solo producer. Currently his productions can be found under various guises on labels such as Tronicsole, Brique Rouge, Underwater, Random House, Om Records and Mettle Music.

Also from Glasgow, Dominic Martin has been DJing for over 12 years and in that time has played alongside some of the industry’s top spinners. On the studio front, Dom produces under 2 monikers: Dominic Martin and Domsko. As Dominic Martin his tracks reflect the influences of black soulful music, jazzy US, deep and funky house, while the Domsko tracks showcase his harder, electronic white-boy leanings. 2007 was a breakthrough year for Dom, signing solo tracks to prestigious labels including Kingdom Kome, Tronicsole and SECND.

The big success stories have been the few releases the pair have written and produced together. Their debut EP for Nordic Trax received huge support and was a mainstay in the sets of Derrick Carter throughout 2007 as well as being licensed to DJ Heather’s ‘Om Summer Sessions 2′ CD. Their Soulgroove EP was released at the end of 2007 on US label Guesthouse to similar acclaim and plays from the genre’s top dogs.

Remixes come from Chicago based James Curd who is currently causing huge waves with his EPs and remixes for Drop, Myna, Alphabet and his own Greenskeepers label. Lost My Dog’s Strakes & Dafeet team up again for their 4th remix for the label and Shindig resident Neil Bainbridge completes the release fresh from work for labels including Kolour, 3am and Movim.

Dominic Martin has a forthcoming solo release on Lost My Dog (LMD021) entitled ‘Touch of Soul’ which has been remixed by fellow Scot and house-legend Milton Jackson. The single, also remixed by Pete Dafeet, will be in April.

Magazine Reviews

iDJ – 4/5
A Strictly Scottish affair on Lost My Dog as ex-Solemusic big cheese Harris teams up with his pal Martin. At first I wasn’t blown away, but things get interesting about two minutes in with some cheeky old skool stabs and plenty of sharp well-placed fills. Things get even better as James Curd provides a New Orleans-flavoured rub that’s bound to cause major silliness on all your floors. Seek and support!

Our House Mag
As well as being a vinyl fiend I’m an avid collector of the old Jazzmag, so this caused much excitement when landing on my door mat from the incompetent k9 keepers from Middlesbrough. Chris Harris needs no introduction to the scene, as well as being an established solo producer for many years he also held the label manager’s post for Glasgow’s Solemusic and A&R for little sister Tronicsole for 8 years, home to Geoff M & Stevie Sole Middleton. Dominic, also from Glasgow has been spinning for over a decade and he too is no stranger to the desk either, having notched up various releases, however it wasn’t until last year after dropping EP’s off at Nordic and Guesthouse that the pair became more widely known with like minded jackers. The original is proper new school jack, with some ace smoky vocal snippets, think The Sound Republic, Natural Rhythm and we are on the money, put it this way Primal will sell shit loads! James Curd of Greenskeepers fame adds his usual swing thing but I can’t help feel it’s a bit too much for my lugs these days and I’m just not feeling it. LMD’s top boys Strakes & Dafeet turn out a decent number by beefing up the drums, adding depth and enabling the track to be more versatile and give it some heads down flavour as does Shindig’s Neil Bainbridge, his version is right up there with the best of them and this makes me think he must be a really good DJ, he creates a great, slightly wonky early doors or late night affair. Mustard!

DJ Mag – 5/5
Heavily disguised jazz samples in some of the mixes bleat out very catchy hooks, especially on the essential ‘Original Mix’. The underlying trait of most of the four mixes here is the addictive basslines that spew out funk all over the shop and there is enough funk goin’ on in that ‘Original Mix’ alone to raise James Brown from the dead. Real dirty.

DJ Mag – 3.5/5
Harris and Martin crank up some boompty vibes, cinematic spoken word snatches bouncing off crisp beats and minimal acid squiggles with a little latter day electro flourish. Strakes and Dafeet provide the more rambling, organic vibe and Neil Bainbridge a deeper loungey thing, but the real star is James Curd’s mix, a humdinger of a groove that introduces a catchy as hell filtered high-level bassline and tinny piano and jazz horns sample driven by a Green Velvet sensibility.

DJ Reactions
