The Lowdown

Jake Childs requires very little introduction to the more discerning house ear. With releases on leading labels including Drop Music, Freerange and Doubledown, not to mention his own Uni.form imprints, he has taken the house world by storm over the past few years. We’re delighted to release this EP from the Houston house hero, a record we’ve been talking to Jake about for some time.

Lil’ Mark is drafted in for remix duties and notches up another of his full sounding yet stripped back jackers. The mix appears simple at first, a real trademark of Mark’s sound, but its bumpin’ bassline, bleeps and squelches grow around you becoming more intense with every listen. This works equally well early in a set or when things are in full flow – one for fans of MFF, Paranoid, Washhouse and all things Freaks.

Jake’s original mix of “Satisfy” incorporates his brand of choppy jackin’ beats, punchy snares, gritty synths and rolling bass that rips apart any dancefloor. The track flips mid-way and bubbles under as the bass lines compete for attention before recombining for another roof raising moment.

Jake’s second original ” Paradise (Lock & Key)” is an eerie voyage into the middle ground between house and pop. Once again moody synths and a growling sub bass lead the way, with the haunting vocals of Morning Star (who has previously featured on Jake’s Icon and Drop Music EPs) gliding over the mix.

Magazine Reviews

Plasticsoup.com 7/10
LMD have never limited themselves to the boompty sound, but a few of their releases have had that skippity bumping vibe, and this is another. The A-side is dominated by a remix, and a dub at that, by Lil’ Mark, whose sub-bass and bleeps version of ‘Satisfy’ belies his Music For Freaks heritage. With the remix out of the way, Jake Childs gets the B-Side to himself, and the original of ‘Satisfy’ does just that, a rolling bassline supporting an urgent, bouncing melody. But the one to really catch the ear here is the pop-sprinkled (in a good way) ‘Paradise (Lock & Key)’. Whilst it sounds uncannily similar to Brett Johnson’s ‘Temptations & Lies’, there are far worse tracks from which to take inspiration, and I always enjoy hearing original vocals. Solid stuff.

Release Date: January 2006

A2. Da Sunlounge Late Nite Dub
B1. Jake Childs & Pete Dafeet Remix

The Lowdown

YSE aka Ant Plate is one half of deep house superstar combo Rhythm Plate. Hailing from the beautifully backward peak district town of Matlock, in Derbyshire, Plate constantly varies in age and when not making music sells deep house insurance. Rhythm Plate began recording their efforts on a borrowed 8-track tape player down in the local bus station. After conquering the bourgeoning village hall/pub scene in Matlock they set their sights on taking over the Midlands through collaborations with Mantis, DiY, Winding Road, Flat & Round and Procreation, in the process finding the transpeak bus service a particularly useful way of getting to gigs. Ambitions for world domination soon followed; the duo releasing material on record labels “not from ’round ‘ere” such as San Diego’s Bluem, San Francisco’s Roam and Portland’s Losofono (LSF). Now heading back to their Midland’s roots, YSE’s release on Lost My Dog is his first solo outing and demonstrates a remarkable talent.

Not Wot You Got is superbly crafted midlands house with tight crunching beats and bouncing bass wrapped around a soul funk backbone, brought to the forefront in a slow motion breakdown which gives the track real character . Myna Music’s Da Sunlounge delivers a no nonsense jacking dub which has to be heard loud to be fully appreciated: perfect for the small hours, a deep bassline and thumping kick drive the track along. An exciting transatlantic link up between Uni.form’s Jake Childs and Lost My Dog’s Pete Dafeet culminates in a slower tempo B side mix with swinging beats, bubbling bass and intricate keys and synths. The package is completed by a second YSE original; Ant displays another side to his sound in “Yeah I Tell Yer”, a punching bass-led slab of fun jacking house with brilliantly interesting sounds and possibly the funniest intro ever to grace wax.

Magazine Reviews

IDJ – Jan 2006 4/5 *Recommended*
More goodness from Lost My Dog, this time in the form of Ant Plate’s deliciously old skool East Midlands deep house. ‘Not Wot You Got’ sounds like what you’d get if you crossed Drop Music-style beats with the sort of sweet spaciness once favoured by Plate’s previous employers, Mantis Recordings – only with a mad hip hop breakdown in the middle. Tasty. Groovier still is Jake Childs & Pete Dafeet’s flipside rework, which fixes a lovely old skool Chicago B-line to killer sci-fi synths for maximum cosmic raving. Set those phasers to fun! (MA)

DJ Mag – Jan 2006 4/5
Lost My Dog are really doing it for me at the moment, they release vibrant house music with balls of steel and ‘Not Wot You Got’ is no exception. The original version has distinctive Nottingham flavours percolating away, as well as little P-funk drum fills. This all makes sense once the track breaks down into a slow funk groove, before bursting into deeper house mode once again. Da Sunlounge’s ‘Late Nite Dub’ is very tracky, stripped down to beats and bass with minimal interruption from some whistling keys. Jake Childs and Pete Dafeet keep the simple but effective groove attitude going, with slow, dotted bass stabs plodding over a raw, chugging groove. Raw and raunchy underground house. (YH)

Night Magazine – Feb 2006 4/4
Another month, another LMD release & this time it’s Matlock’s finest house man, Rhythm Plate. The original mix is sublime deep house exactly as it should be done – spaced out beats, a heavy bassline & a solid groove; just perfect. Da Sunlounge goes into Inland Knights territory & sounds great for it, following the main bassline & smoothing the groove out around it, a very worthy mix to compliment the original. Jake Childs & Pete Dafeet turn out a genius slab of electronic house, wobbly synths riding a low-end bass you could walk on. Finally the techy “Yeah A Tell Yer” rounds of another brilliant LMD release. (AB)

DJ Reactions

Jay Tripwire
Been playing it non-stop since I got it. Lots of people asking me what it is, coulda been a 1 sider its sooo good!

Jimpster (Freerange)
Very good stuff once again. Fave for me is the original of ‘Not Wot You Got’.

Lil’ Mark (Classic)
‘Not Wot You Got’ is dope. The dub is dope. The whole thing is pretty dope. I’ll be playing this for sure.

Joey Youngman (Fetish, Jackin Tracks)
I really like the original of “Not Wot You Got”…great track! Will
definitely be playing this one!

The Littlemen (Mobile Trax, Drop, Tango)
Top notch. Like all tracks but Da Sunlounge mix and ‘Yeah A Tell Yer’ (crazy!) are the ones we are spinning.

Tyler Stadius (Fabric)
My pick of the bunch is Da Sunlounge’s Dub – real bumping & funky

Luke McKeehan (Nordic Trax, Canada)
The new release is hot!!

Massimo Dacosta (Icon, Uniform, Flat & Round)
My favourites are “Not Wot You Got” – original and Da Sunlounge mix. Deep and classy

Blacksoul (Icon)
Dope!!! Both originals are my fave.

DJ Linus (Exun)
I really like Jake & Pete’s mix…funky, electronic sublime piece of house music. Will chart and play.

Julian Sanza (2020 Soundsystem, Ciudad Feliz)
The one for me is Da Sunlounge Late Nite Dub, this one sounds really good and is quite dubbed, not too busy.

Cosmic Groove Transmission (DiY, Brique Rouge)
Jake & Pete’s remix is the best one for me – will definitely back this one up with lots of plays. Fresh but still gives a healthy nod to the past. like most of the LMD stuff.

James Talk (Saved)
Mint as always!

It all started on September 30th of 1976 when Jake entered this world in Austin, Texas. Growing up in a musical environment Jake’s life mission was obviously going to be some expression in music. His father’s 9-5 was playing and touring with the Navy Jazz band as one of the trumpet players and, following in his the footsteps of his father, Jake soon began to pick up the trumpet. The guitar, bass, and keys soon followed into Jakes hands and ears. The willingness to spend time practicing coupled with an open mind to new sounds took Mr. Childs through rock to jazz to techno to house.

His early experiences with dance music in the 90′s mostly took place in San Antonio’s various clubs, raves and at endless after-hours parties. It was during this time that Jake undertook and subsequently dropped out from studying for a music business and audio degree. After moving to Houston all other styles of music took a back seat to house as Jake was influenced by the MK Ultra radio show on Rice’s KTRU, the Scooby Dew Crew’s events and Wednesday nights at the Orbit Room. An invitation from the S.D.C. to perform a live PA also turned into a period of steady work with production company The Dance Junkies.

Working relationships over the next couple of years with Johnny Fiasco, Chris Lumm, LBO, Chello and Paul Dyne helped to solidify the next logical step, to start a record label. Uni.form Recordings was born; the first release was simply a promo CD mix by Sista Stroke titled “Soulquarian.” This cemented in Jakes mind what he wanted to do, namely to develop and nurture Uni.form’s identity as an entity as well as help develop and support the artists that would come to be on the label. The roster boasts some of the best of the new producers as well as legends in the world of house including Johnny Fiasco, Jacob London, No Assembly Firm, Pete Dafeet, Blacksoul, Matt Bandy, Swirl People, Natural Rhythm, Inland Knights, Santiago and Bushido and Vernon And Dacosta.

The future promises to deliver many frequent flyer miles with worldwide bookings ranging from New Zealand, South Africa, South America and all across Europe. Jake’s production work has appeared on labels such as Drop Music, Seasons, Fetish, Dust Traxx, Housetown and Vista. Following the huge success of Jake’s first two releases on Drop Music will be a full length album. Don’t expect a bunch of dj singles (though they are inevietable) on the full length as the plans are for a real artist album that can be listened to beginning to end with a vision destination in mind. Additional projects are lined up alongside Tango/Nightshift/Detour boss Tony Hewitt. Throw in the Agenda Media Group and a music promotions company and it looks like the only shut eye may be on the plane.

Jake’s work ethic and strength of vision will no doubt elevate his productions, label and promotions company to a reputation and status of world class. He may already be there but don’t tell him, yet.
