The Lowdown

Roland Nights follows up 2010’s ‘Phazz’ with new single ‘Yellow’ for Lost My Dog Records. A tasty remix package featuring LMD favourites Jay Tripwire, Murat Kilic and Nick Dare takes ‘Yellow’ in different directions covering chunky bumping house, warm deep grooves and bubbling, techy acid.

Roland Nights burst onto the scene in January 2010 with a remix of Jay West for Lost My Dog and swiftly followed up with the aforementioned ‘Phazz’ and music for Urban Torque, including a remix of Tom Middleton. Further original music and remixes were released on Grouper, Dutchie, 3am, Toto, Cromarti and 2600 Records, making for an impressive first year from the Burnley based producer.

Murat Kilic is a well respected DJ in the Australian electronic music scene and a prolific producer of tech house, deep house and techno with releases over the last few years on some of the world’s most forward thinking labels including Stil Vor Talent (Berlin) and Stereo Seven Plus (Milan). He has also completed remixes for labels such as BEEF, Kaato, Subsonic, Long Distance and Tribal Vision. He was been a regular visitor to Beatport’s top 20 deep house chart throughout 2010, including for his remix of Michelle Owen’s ‘Dee & Deaf’ on Lost My Dog. Murat is the founder, booker and resident DJ for one of Sydney’s longest running and best known after-hours club’s ‘SPICE’ held at HOME Terrace every week from 5am on Sunday.

Nick Dare’s music productions and record label have been making quite an impact since the turn of the century. His London-based label Reform Recordings has been responsible for much of his output, under the names Nick Dare, Liquid Dreams and Overdrive (his project with Justin Drake, formerly of Peace Division). His tracks have been supported by leading DJs including X-Press 2, Tom Stephan, and Paul Woolford. His music can also be found on Detour, Wiggle and Deepology Digital in addition to his well-received Dub People EP and remixes for Lost My Dog.

DJ Mag has described Jay Tripwire as being, “responsible for some of the most exciting underground house music to come out of North America in recent years.” The Vancouver based producer has well over 100 releases to his credit including a critically acclaimed album ‘Gemini Soul’ on Nordic Trax and a mix CD with Steve Bug for the uber cool Poker Flat in 2010. He also runs his own label Tonality.

The Lowdown

Tom Lown made quite an impact with his debut Lost My Dog release, ‘Love Potion EP’, in March. The three track EP, which also included a remix by Harold Heath, reached the top five on Juno Download along with support from DJs including Mark Farina, Joshua Iz (Iz & Diz) and Nick Holder. Not bad going for only his third release! Another supporter was Canadian house music legend Jay Tripwire who was so taken by ‘Love Potion’ that he turned in not one, not two, but three brand new remixes, fully deserving of their own special release.

Jay Tripwire has been described by DJ Mag as being “Responsible for some of the most exciting underground house music to come out of North America in recent years.” The Vancouver based producer has well over 100 releases to his credit including a critically acclaimed album ‘Gemini Soul’ on Nordic Trax and a mix CD as part of the Fabric series. He now runs his own label Tonality.

On his ‘8 Channels’ and ‘Revenge of the Juno 106’ remixes Jay strips things back to basics with two versions which are gritty, soulful and emotive at the same time. In the immortal words of Kerri Chandler, “f*ck all that weak sh*t, let’s get back to the raw”. Tripwire certainly does! His other ’8 Channels’ work can be found on Poker Flat, SOCO Audio, Conya and NRK. The ‘Mid Tempo Interpretation’ drops the pace and is in fact a brand new original production from Jay inspired by Love Potion.

Following a live music background, Tom Lown started DJing at various parties and clubs in London back in the mid 90′s including Peg and Plastic People. A move to New York City saw him pick up a residency at SubKulture and also important online outlets East Village Radio and Downshift Radio. Through his work at a New York studio, Tom composed and produced music for TV and commercials. Now back in Catford, London, he continues to produce deep house, downbeat and electronica, and has secured releases on Sudup Recordings, Warmth and The Savant Guard alongside Lost My Dog.

DJ Reactions

The Lowdown

“Responsible for some of the most exciting underground house music to come out of North America in recent years.” – DJ Magazine

Jay Tripwire is a man needing little introduction. The Vancouver based producer has over 100 releases to his credit with over 100,000 records sold on some of the finest labels underground house music has to offer. His music has featured on numerous commercially-released mix CD’s by many major artists and has been charted by everyone from John Digweed to Terry Francis to Fred Everything, illustrating the his vast range of appeal. Jay says he is “a DJ first and foremost”, something he has proven time and time, playing regularly at the world’s finest clubs such as Fabric, London and in countries including Turkey, Spain, Russia, Bulgaria, Costa Rica, racking up the kind of airmiles only elite businessmen do. Jay’s first EP for Lost My Dog, “Everytime” was superbly received by the press and DJs alike and has subsequently been licensed for various compilations. We know there are plenty of choices out there but when it comes to naughty basslines and dirty grooves, there’s only one name: Jay Tripwire.

“Return To Roots” is a three track project by Jay showcasing a sound that strips house music right back to its basics and relights the family ethos that was once so engrained within, and helped build, the genre. “Harmony & Peace” is, without a shadow of doubt, a pure dancefloor rocker. The beats, bass and chord stabs all have one common theme: to make you shake your butt. The track retains a warmness throughout and brilliantly placed spoken vocals add to its strong hooks – purveyors of fine house may notice a slight nod towards David Duriez’s seminal “House & Blend”. Brothers & Sisters continues the theme of the EP, again utilising a well placed spoken vocal this time alongside an infectious acid line and floaty chords. Jay’s super snappy beats bounce and roll underneath making this another dancefloor jacker; sitting somewhere between Chicago and Detroit. The finishing touch, Najavo Soul, gives an insight into the man himself – the title reflecting Jay’s own roots. This cut shows the deeper side to Jay’s sound, heard most recently on Nordic Trax, and is one for the late night/early morning sessions. Spacey pads and rides pave the way over a deeper than deep bassline that prowls along for the duration.

Magazine Reviews

iDJ – 4/5
The Tripster, as no one calls him, is getting better by the minute. This is the second of his three entries in this issue and it would take a pedant of monumental proportions to find fault with any of them. Here you’ve got another three tracks where each one could almost be a dictionary definition of deep US house. Old fashioned? Yes. Classic? With bells on.

DJ Mag – 4/5
Here we are at LMD014, my time flies! The Canadian born button pusher and fader sliderer attempts to keep the pressure on and it’s the fiery “Brothers & Sisters” that the party gets started. As I said over a year ago now, acid house will be back: now there’s a new wave of tracks and this belter is up there with the best. Soulful vocal chants dot the bars in random little howls, but it’s the searing acid flava that carries this cut.

Nocturnal Magazine
Canuck Jay Tripwire knows how to bump it deep, and his latest on Lost My Dog continues that trend. Big basslines, thick kicks, and sweeping pads combine with dub vocal elements and a smooth string line.

Music-News.com – reviewer: Rich Denton 4/5
Mr Tripwire consistently delivers his unique house sound. Smooth rhythms or acid tinged grooves, either way the same funk fuelled sound remains underneath. Three tracks here all of which suit that time of the evening when the asses begin to shake. ‘Harmony and Peace’ uses a preacher type vocal sample to get the message across. ‘Navajo Soul’ has a solid funky bassline using subtle key changes and an excellent central breakdown. The pick of the three though and one of my favourite tracks of the moment is ‘Brothers and Sisters’ again using a simple vocal sample, this is where Jay uses his expertise to create an acid twinged bassline that flows throughout.

The Lowdown

Maxim Saidashev, Egor Belov & Konstantin Lyubimov make up Luckystars, a unique and creative band whose tracks are revolutionising the Russian electronic scene and are making waves in Europe and beyond. All three are successful producers in their own right so when they get in the studio together the results are devastating. Their fresh approach to producing distinguishes their music from the mass of listless music boring clubbers across the globe – each and every track is saturated with unrestrained energy, intelligent harmonies and an accumulation of emotions. Most recently Luckystars have seen releases on the UK’s ever impressive Urbantorque imprint and Germany’s Conya.

The original mix of ‘Swimming Under The Ice’ is a Spiritcatcher-esqe slice of deep melodic house; crisp snappy beats underpin lush pads and intricate keys and the track rumbles ever upwards towards electronic bliss.

The first remix is a real treat as two of Vancouver’s house legends team up for a deeper than deep rework. Jay Tripwire needs very little introduction, with well over 100 releases and a Fabric CD to his name he is one of the most respected producers of the last decade, while Gavin Froome has been making waves in the deep house scene for many years too, most notably for his releases and album on Nordic Trax. Jay and Gavin serve up a punching deep house cut; devastating beats, percussion and a super deep bassline pave the way for pads taken from the original mix and a freshly added spoken vocal.

With a string of releases due imminently on labels including Robsoul, S-Sens and Head Tunes, Pete Dafeet is fast becoming one of the UKs most sought after deep house producers. His Bathtime Scrub mix features a deep bouncing bass combined with subtle acid squelches and a breakdown drawing on the original’s chords. The track climaxes with superbly crafted hi hats giving the rework real dancefloor drive with a heavy dose of swing.

Magazine Reviews

iDJ – 4/5 Recommended
Blimey, it doesn’t get much deeper than the Original. Those jazzy charms are exactly the sort you want serenading you at 6am. Better for the floor though is the version from Jay Tripwire and Gavin Froome which is just as deep but this time with that smoky, druggy, floaty vibe that reminds this reviewer at least of Marshall Jefferson’s “Mushrooms”. And there’s few better recommendations than that.

DJ Reactions

Paolo Mojo
Enjoying the original mix of this, nice deep tackle with good chords. Cool!

Jay West (Lowdown, Drop, Flavor)
Really liking this!

Blacksoul (Deepfunk, Blacksoul Music)
EXCELLENT!!!! Deephouse with balls!!! Love the original and Pete`s remix!!! Playing this! 5/5

Sonny Wharton (Renaissance)
This rocked Renaissance NYE and I ended up playin both Jay & Pete’s mixes in the main room… Pete’s did most damage!

Leigh Morgan (Urbantorque)
Classy stuff as ever from the Luckystars crew, all the mixes are cool but the original wins out for me with it’s lush deepness and builds very nicely.

Harold Heath (Urbantorque, Lost My Dog)
Really classy release, Jay & Gavin’s mix is sweet but Pete just pips it with his remix which is a right groovy little so and so.

FraidSo (Greenhouse, Lost My Dog)
Another great forward thinking release. Jay & Gavin’s mix is the pick for us – great intriguing deepness!!

Murray Richardson (2020 Vision, Nordic Trax)
Blasting these across Brazil for the next month!

Rhythm Plate (Winding Road)
Its got to be Swimming under Stars Original mix for me there matey: fluidly deep moisture!

Burnski (2020 Vision)
That original is really nice, proper tech house. Love it – looking seriously hot for ya!

Slum Science (Hudd Trax)
Feelin’ Petes & Jay’s/Gavin’s mixes

Charles Webster
These are really nice!

Anil Chawla (Saved, Ministry of Sound)
Tripwire mix is my favourite (deep and nicely trippy), with the Dafeet mix coming in a close second, will most definitely play them both! More splendid work from one of my favourite labels!

Tyler Stadius
Lovely tune. Really dig Jay & Gavin’s mix. Deeeep!

Spettro
WOW! I am loving my Saturday morning shuffle today. Sweet bliss. Everything is placed just right. This track can be applied in many situations. 10 out of 10!

Tom Golden (Homegrown, Stylus, Manchester)
Loving the Tripwire & Froome mix, have played on radio and charted. Top stuff.

The Lowdown

After a whirlwind first 15 months, we’re marking our 10 th release on LMD by revisiting some of the labels biggest tracks with fresh remixes. Stepping up are Argentina’s Julian Sanza (2020 Soundsystem, Ciudad Feliz), Harold Heath (Urbantorque, Sensei), Pete Dafeet (Lost My Dog, Uni.form) and the “Dutch Devil” Tommy Largo (Lost My Dog, Herbal Essence) who’s mixes all add up to make a varied EP taking in deep, techy and acid house elements. Both Julian and Harold got in touch with the label directly asking if they could remix their respective tracks as they loved the original version so much but wanted to add their unique twist.

First up is Julian’s mix of “Come On” which keeps the original hook and fuses it with 2020 style beats, a stomping electro tinged bassline and quirky keys. Harold’s mix of “Smoketoke” has an old school feel to it with a 90′s garage style synths, a deep growling bass, techy flicks and driving beats to carry it all along. Pete’s dub of “Everytime” is a chilled out groover with squelchy beats and warm bass. The original vocal parts, crafted into keys, stabs and pads, generate an ethereal mood which peaks as the track descends into an inviting, smooth breakdown. Tommy’s take on “Gettin’ Serious” rounds things off, giving the track an acid twist; aimed directly at the dancefloor his mix gets down to business from the off with pumping beats and a bassline that does all the work.

Magazine Reviews

DJ Mag – Aug 2006 5/5 ***Moneyshot***
This label has been one of the most inspiring over the year for me so far. Solid house is what they pedal and their tenth release reflects a continuing trend. Here you can sample some of those past 10 releases all mixed up and funked up, from the acidic ‘Come On’ recorded by Tommy Largo, to the deep ‘Getting Serious’ from Subterfuge & Tony Thomas. Four stingin’ cuts that stink to high heaven of old fashioned house values and flavours.

Plasticsoup.com 8/10
It’s sometimes said that a remix can only be as good as the source material. Now that’s not strictly true, there have been several turds polished into diamonds over the years, but that’s the order of things here, my favourites on the EP are remixes of the tracks I preferred on their original release. First up, Julian Sanza tackles Tommy Largo’s acidic ‘Come On’. The Silver City man has injected an early 80s electro strut that adds a funk rarely found in acid house. It’s the female vocal from the original that makes Pete Dafeet’s bubbling tech-house version of Jay Tripwire’s ‘Everytime’ my other favourite from the EP. Tech-house is very much the order of the day on the remaining tracks, and while not at all weak, Harold Heath’s rolling take on Adam B’s ‘Smoketoke’, and the deep acid of Tommy Largo’s remix of Subterfuge & Tony Thomas’ ‘Gettin’ Serious’ don’t have the standout qualities of the others. Looking forward to the next batch of original material from this crew.

DJ Reactions

James Talk
The whole EP is large, Julian Sanza remix of Tommy Largo is the top pick. but all of them are amazing. Charted.

The Littlemen
Love the Pete Dafeet Mix, fave mix by far, will be caining this over the summer.

Spettro (Doubledown, Amenti)
Julian Sanza mix does it HOT for me on this EP. This trax is poppin and jumpin like a wet noodle out the boiler. Julian’s mix will definitely be on my top ten.

Tyler Stadius
Great EP! Love the remix of “Gettin’ Serious”. Real groovy.

Jay West (Lowdown, Agave)
I like the tracks a lot!

Murray Richardson
Great! Charted #5

Shafunkers (Saved)
Wicked tracks. Reckon that there’s something in the package for all occasions. Particularly liking the Julian Sanza remix of “Come On” – nice funked up 303 vibe. Will be rocking these in Brazil later this month!

Luckystars (Urbantorque)
Great production, loving the Pete Dafeet Dub, 4/5.

Leigh Morgan (Urbantorque)
All round cool release, Harold works his tech magic as ever, the pick for me goes to the house vibes ‘Come On’, cool lazy acid house…wicked!

Cosmic Groove Transmission (Brique Rouge, 2020)
Julian is quality. Nice gentle start with the original acid – then two minutes in, hold on to your drinks ‘cos you know people are about to rush to the floor!! Pete has nailed a “calm before the storm” track that DJs should lap up. This is the unsung hero of your set that tirelessly works for the team so the strikers can score and get all the credit. Owen Hargeaves in disguise?

When you release as many tunes as Jay Tripwire it’s inevitable that some won’t hit the spot, but with ‘Everytime’ JT gets it just about perfect. The trademark bumpy beats and funky basslines give it that familiar Tripwire feel, while the cheeky vocal samples and dainty keys give it the life to jump straight at you. It’s quality house music that can’t help to please. On the flip there are two more excellent cuts which take things a bit deeper and darker, with superb dubbed out melodies and late night attitude. This twelve will be a welcome addition to your collection. 4.5/5

Night Magazine – Mar 2006 ***4/4 Single of the Month***
Kicking off with “Everytime”, Jay Tripwire’s trademark crisp tech beats & undulating bassline style is immediately on point, with a sample which sounds incredibly familiar, yet impossible to place. Quite simply this is bass-led house at its finest, a point proven with “Hastings St On A Weds”, which uses the same drums, but opts for a more tripped out dubby vibe. Rounding off the release is another killer remix from Strakes & Dafeet, squelching the bass & adding extra bounce in the drums. Lost My Dog is on a roll & no sign of stopping. 4/4

Jay Tripwire keeps up the pressure early in the new year with another sure fire winner….EVERYTIME is wicked and comes with a cool Strakes & Dafeet remix…quality yet again from Lost My Dog. Charted #04.

Great tunes from Jay again. He must have been taking happy bills – real cheery vibe on these. Bouncy! Dig the Strakes/Dafeet electrified, skanky remix of “Everytime” too.

Jimpster (Freerange)
Very solid and chunky as with all Jay’s stuff.

Liking all three mixes, Jay’s original Everytime is the track for me, cool vocal, fat b-line, a really solid bumpin groove, will def. play

Rhythm Plate (Winding Road, DiY, Flat & Round)
All tracks are acidically techtronicalistic in their approach, but ‘Hastings..’ has to be my favourite. Triple mint.

DJ Linus (Exun, Brique Rouge)
‘Hastings St…’ is the strongest of all 3. I love that groovy b-line rhythm. Definitely going to play.

Jay Tripwire’s original version is, in my opinion, his best production to date. I’m playing it all the time.
