Catalogue Number: LMD025 | Release Date: July 2009

The Lowdown

Lost My Dog reach a landmark 25th vinyl release after approximately four years of putting out some of the finest underground house music and establishing themselves as a record label to take note of. That time has seen the label survive two of the UK’s largest distributors going into administration (Amato and Pinnacle), and while LMD has adapted to the changing market with a new stream of digital only releases, they continue to return to their vinyl roots.

It is fitting that this release should fall to Pete Dafeet, who is label co-owner and was on the first ever Lost My Dog release, before going on to produce over 20 more original tracks and remixes for the label. Specific highlights for Pete have included remixing Jay Tripwire and Nathan Coles, as well as having his own music reworked by Fred Everything and Demarkus Lewis. He has also worked with several other labels along the way including Shaboom, Toolroom, Robsoul and Uni.form as well as running his own Southside Shuffle imprint.

On ‘Alto’, a hypnotic chord-heavy deep house track which should please fans of Freerange, Pete has sought remixes from some of his current favourite producers.

Nacho Marco is in white-hot form with new releases and remixes popping up all over the place, all of which are creating a stir in A-list DJ charts. Along with releases for the likes of Freerange, Plastic City and Pacha, which are just the tip of an impressive discography, Nacho runs his own well regarded label Loudeast Records from his hometown of Valencia in Spain. His busy DJ schedule sees him heavily involved with the annual Sonar festival as well as guesting all over Europe.

YSE (aka Ant Plate and one half of Rhythm Plate) is regarded by Pete Dafeet as one of the best and most innovative house producers in the UK. YSE has a close working relationship with Lost My Dog; his ‘Bounce Back’ release is the label’s biggest selling title to date, he released his debut original work with LMD in the form of ‘Not Wot You Got’ and has also remixed Nonfiction. There’s lots more lined up from him in the future too.

Johan ELG impressed with his recent remix of Pete Dafeet’s ‘94’ on Lost My Dog and with tracks on Pete’s other label Southside Shuffle. His discography also includes music for Low Pressings. Originally from Stockholm, but now based in Melbourne Johan’s influences span house, techno, hip hop and jazz.

Magazine Reviews

DJ Mag – 5/5

Four mixes on offer and the ‘YSE Saxless Mix’ is bad to the bone, dirty funk-house driven by a niggling piano that prods at the track like an irritating kid. Also love the random bongos that play little flurries of beats over the bouncing electric bass and swingy chopped male vocals.

DMC Update – 5/5

The rabidly-brilliant London-based underground house label has humped its way to its 25th release so it’s only fitting that the perpetrator is honcho Pete Dafeet, who cocks his leg and unfurls another belter. ‘Alto’ is another lesson in deep house bliss, splashed with acid and bathed in gonadic chord structures. Remixes come from Nacho Marco in classy piano-led mode, YSE [Ant Plate from Rhythm Plate] reaffirming his position as a fast-rising exponent of house in its purest form and Johan ELG letting loose a light-of-touch sonic mud-skipper with terrier’s testicles. Happy silver jubilee to the UK’s most vibrant house music hotbed.

Inhale

For Lost My Dog’s 25 release co-owner Pete Defeet unleashes a pleasing deep tech-house single title “Alto” On this release we have remixes by Nacho Marco, YSE & Johan ELG. All mixes are doing their thing here but to me the stand outs are the original mix & Nacho Marco’s mix. The original mix is late night deep tech-house. The chords used are chilled with nice atmospheric elements added in the back ground. As for DJs this is a nice rider track for long blends. If you are looking for more peak hour action the Nacho Marco remix fits the bill. The chords and stabs Mr. Marco uses will definitely get the attention of the dance floor. The beat here is strong as well. I particularly like the way the dub effects are placed on the vocals at different parts of the track. This really keeps things moving. All in all this is a good release for fans of the deep tech house sound.

Goa Club (Spain)

Release Date: April 2009

3: Danny Stott Remix
4: Johan ELG Remix

The Lowdown

Pete Dafeet is back on his own label Lost My Dog with new original material after a break of over 12 months. ‘94’ is classic Dafeet, driving deep house, and comes backed by remixes from Andrew Phelan & Origami (warped bassline and whistling action!), new LMD signing Danny Stott (classic sounding deepness) and rising Swedish star Johan ELG (hypnotic deep building groove).

Since the release of ‘Lungs’ for Lost My Dog back in November 2007, Pete Dafeet has been concentrating on resurrecting his Southside Shuffle label including some fine EPs from Jay Tripwire, Harold Heath and Pete himself. He has also released two records with US label Headtunes, one of which was ranked in Juno Records’ ‘Best of 2008 Deep House’, and turned out several remixes. His remix of ‘Do It Like This’ by Jake Island on Toolroom is currently causing a stir with strong reviews and DJ support.

Based out of San Francisco’s famed Moulton Studios complex, Andrew Phelan & Origami have made a name for themselves in the international house community with their mix of funk and tech based sounds built around a variety of live instrumentation and vocals. Their work can be heard in collaborations with various musicians and vocalists such as Sen-Sei, Brown, and Audio Angel. The duo have released music with labels including Amenti, Drop Music, Eight-Tracks and So Sound amongst others, but it is their recent outings on Phelan’s own Prismatic Tracks that sent the dog sniffing and snapping them up for this dirty-basslined Claude VonStroke-styled remix.

Danny Stott caught the attention of Lost My Dog after a tip off from 3am’s Al Bradley. After checking out other great releases on New Era and Ambiosphere (the labels run by Tony Thomas), Grouper Recordings and Dutchie, LMD decided it was time to get in on the act and signed 2 EPs from Stott, the first of which ‘Circuits’ will be released in March. Stott’s remix here is further evidence of a sound which is turning the heads of many; 2009 will also see releases on Urban Torque and Night Drive Music.

Johan ELG rounds off the package. Having released his first ever EP on Pete Dafeet’s Southside Shuffle in 2008, his discography now also includes work for respected label Low Pressings. Born in Stockholm, Johan’s passion for music developed rather early. He started drumming at the tender age of 10 and became something of young (and Swedish) Dave Grohl – playing in three bands simultaneously. His appreciation for music grew as he did, and after five well spent years traveling the world, Johan decided to relocate down under and upped sticks to Melbourne. After getting used to living upside down Johan started producing music, completed an Audio Engineering degree, and became known in his locale for his flawless sets spinning House, Techno, Hip Hop, and Jazz.

Magazine Reviews

iDJ – 9/10
Whilst all around them seem to have resigned to the apparent demise of the music industry, Lost My Dog seems to be one of those labels who have thrived. The Andrew Phelan and Origami mix has really caught my attention on their latest release. A lovely bass line with a whistled lead line, shows the rare skill of keeping the energy on the dancefloor without having to try too hard!

DMC Update – 5/5
Currently celebrating five years in the music business since first emerging on Bosh, Mr Dafeet has good reason to wear a cake on his head and dive into a vat of champers. His Lost My Dog and Southside Shuffle imprints are leading the charge for a fresh burst of deep house gems splashed in early 90s NY shimmer and requisite warped humour. The Lost My Dog EP boasts his first new track for over 12 months, a bubblingly-propulsive firecracker lightly grilled in muted acid with top hook. There’s a solid trio of remixes: San Francisco’s Andrew Phelan & Origami take time out from their Prismatic Tracks to beef up the groove and add their customary live feel. LMD’s Danny Stott adds extra deepness and hippo’s rectum quotient while Stockholm’s Johan ELG, previously heard on Southside Shuffle and Low Pressings, takes a spacey acid approach.

M8 – 7/8
Not just the best DJ name around, Pete Dafeet makes a return to his own label, Lost My Dog, for the first time in 12 months and it’s definitely been worth the wait as his own ‘original’ mix is exactly that – original. Primarily a deep house track, this has a funky bassline to die for and a sample that Norman Cook would be proud of (‘Wasn’t nuttin like this back in 94′ – I can’t get it out of my head!). Andrew Phelan & Origami add a more electro mix, which is probably my slight favourite and there are a couple of more laid-back mixes from Danny Stott and Johan ELG that are worth checking out.

Virtual Music Magazine – 7/10
Dafeet, on his own label after a year break. This is classic Dafeet, driving deep house and comes backed with remixes from Andrew Phelan & Origami and rising Swedish star, Johan ELG.
