The Lowdown

Junia Ovadose, an artist with one of the most intriguing names on the scene, joins Lost My Dog for an EP of pure, unadulterated, jazzy and energetic Chicago jacking bizznezz. This one is for the fans of Derrick Carter, Sneak, DJ Heather and Johnny Fiasco, four of the premier names who have already shown their support for ‘The 10-45 EP’. The EP name comes from the US police ten-code for ‘animal carcass on the highway’ and raises serious concerns about the whereabouts of our beloved pooch!!

Junia Ovadose is an artist we’ve been fans of for a long time with here at Lost My Dog; in fact he DJed at the very first Lost My Dog launch event back in 2005, but strangely it’s taken almost five years to release any of his music. You could easily be forgiven for thinking he hails from the Windy City when you hear this EP, but in truth he’s from the northern town of Huddersfield in the UK. His sound highlights perfectly just how far the Chicago styles of Derrick Carter, DJ Sneak et al have influenced dance music around the world.

Junia’s CV is very impressive with highlights including music for Greenskeepers’ Igloo and G-Swing imprints and DJ Pierre’s Strictly Rhythm sub-label DJP. DJ wise he has performed regularly in New York, all over Europe and at some of the UK’s most respected parties such as Back To Basics, Hard Times and Le Bloc. His music has been aired on Radio 1 by Pete Tong and on other leading UK dance stations Kiss FM and Galaxy FM. As for the origins of his name, we’re not allowed to divulge!

A remix of ‘Post Modernism’ is provided by Sir Cosmic, who appeared with a remix on the first ever Lost My Dog release and, like Junia, came to fame thanks to James Curd’s Igloo label. He has since recorded for Southside Shuffle, Shak Digital and AJ, a sub-label of Swirl People’s mighty Aroma Recordings.

A1. Gettin Serious
A2. Gettin Serious (Pete Dafeet Remix)
B1. Gettin Serious (Sir Cosmic’s Account)
B2. Gettin Serious (Matt J’s Warped Out Dub)

The Lowdown

Midlands duo Subterfuge make no nonsense jackin’ house music aimed at the dancefloor. This is reflected in their DJ sets where they have made a name for themselves with their 4 deck 2 mixer outings in Derby, Nottingham and further a field. Here they team up with Tony Thomas for their debut release. With over 150 original productions, collaborations and remixes to his name Tony requires little introduction and is well established as one of house music’s leading and most respected producers.

Gettin’ Serious is based on tough jackin and shuffling tribal-esqe beats with a heavy dose of funk thrown into the mix. The beats are super tight and punchy, the bassline drives through the track and the little stabs and samples all combine perfectly to create a peak time monster. Getting Serious has seen widespread support from countless top jocks including Groove Armada, Greg Vickers, Da Sunlounge, Ross Couch and Gordon Kaye. Remixes come from Sir Cosmic (Igloo Records, Chicago) who turns up the bump factor, Matt J, who offers a dubbed out sleazy jackin’ take and Lost My Dog head honcho Pete Dafeet, who turns in a minimal, rumbling, bass heavy re-rub.

Magazine Reviews

iDJ Magazine – April 2005
A new label from the East Midlands is always cause to celebrate. This Loughborough newbie kicks things off in typical Midlands style with a tribal cut that’s got early Murk written all over it. Pete Dafeet, Matt J and Sir Cosmic’s remixes go even deeper. Anyone who can DJ without the need for big room electro cuts will find something useful here. 3/5

Night Magazine – April 05
New label Lost My Dog really mean business here with their debut release, each mix providing something slightly different but equally hot. The original is a tribal-ish bomb, it doesn’t do a great deal but what it does, it does well! Label boss Pete Dafeet adds a very bass-led remix, deep & deadly, while Matt J jacks things up & rework the track into a more US sound. My pick though is the Sir Cosmic mix, very slick & bumpy, not too jackin’ & perfect for getting the floor jumping. More of this please, Lost My Dog! 4/4

4clubbers.net
New label `Lost My Dog` hits the ground running with their first release, “Gettin` Serious”. Subterfuge & Tony Thomas team up to bring us a tough, peak time, tribal number, whilst label owner Pete Dafeet strips it down for the more minimal approach. Sir Cosmic provides the best track on the release, giving the track a more `boompty` feel, and Matt J checks in with a deep, bleepy remix.

DJ Reactions

Groove Armada (Tom Findlay): This is nice! Definitely on that jackin classic sound.

Nic Fanciulli (Radio 1 / Club Class): I fucking love it!!!

Greg Vickers (Tribal Sessions) : Its rocking! Will definitely get plays!

Sonny Wharton (Renaissance): Got the new LMD CD thanks and subsequently played ALL 4 mixes at Stealth on Saturday :o) FUCKIN ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the quality tunage :o)

Inland Knights (Drop): 7/10. Nice tough groover. Favourite Mix: Original

Tyler Stadius (Fabric / Frying Pan, Canada): Solid tracks, really good variety. I’ll try them all out but most likely to stick with Pete’s or Matt’s mix.

Rhythm Plate (Flat & Round / Bluem): Feelin’ Matt’s mix the most…will play out!

Junia Ovadose (Greenhouse / Igloo): Feelin’ Sir Cosmic’s Mix!

Al Bradley (3am): I’ve played the ‘Sir Cosmic Account’ already twice – at Bubblegum & at Mi Casa (Chester) at the weekend, top stuff! I fucking love it, plus Pete’s dub, I’m feeling that too.

The Littlemen (Mobile Trax / Drop): Favourite is Sir Cosmic’s mix.

Steve Conry (Flygaric Tracks): 8/10. Good first release. Very strong track and remixes.

Harold Heath (Urban Torque): I like the Matt J mix, nice and bumping and I’d play this out. The original really kicks along too!

Dan X (No Assembly Firm): I’m feelin the Sir Cosmic mix.

Ross Couch (Tekstyle / Offset): Nice first release, my pick of the 4 mixes is Sir Cosmic’s, good solid groove happening on that one.

Debs (Babble): Love the EP you sent me, its a hot potato and I’ll be dropping it at every opportunity… ha, all the mixes are shit hot, I’ll be playing the original mix…

Gordon Kaye: The original is getting a big response on my floors mid set and Pete’s mix is going down well too. The minimal groove works well in my deeper sets and warm ups… keep ‘em coming!

Parker & Pasquale (Shivoo): Really liking it, especially Pete’s Mix!

Ben Morgan (Chibuku Shake Shake): Sounding nice. My favourites are the original mix and Pete’s remix. Will definitely be playing this.
